The Little Red School House
When I saw the painting of “The Little Red Schoolhouse,” by Larry Dyke, I knew immediately it must be the symbol for Liber Community School. The little red schoolhouse reminds me of a bygone era when a community of parents and leaders got together and decided to whom they would entrust the duty of teaching their precious children. It reminds me of the importance of a synergistic relationship between community leaders, parents and school to raise up the next generation to be productive, self-reliant members of the community.
Another reason Mr. Dyke’s painting was chosen was the smiling, enthusiastic children on their way to school. There have been many times when my children and I have driven by a local school and one of my children has remarked, “The kids look like they are going to jail.” I have had that same feeling myself when I have driven by schools with metal detectors and high fences. At Liber Community School, I see children running happily to class and letting out a “boo” when teachers tell them they will soon have a day off.
The final reason I chose the painting was the beautiful, natural setting in which the little schoolhouse stands. This reminds me of the necessity of children to be outside in the fresh air and dirt as often as possible. Liber Community School hopes to have its permanent home in a place such as this; a place where children can experience animals and dirt and water and fresh air every day.
